Saw this little guy on the way home today...open creek, and little mr. sleek fur, grooming and checking things out.
Now, I don't have the telephoto needed to see his whiskers....but I got the pic. He sat there good as gold for me while I walked along the road to take a few snaps.
He's almost silouette, but can't be helped. Lighting was abt 530 pm...so not the best for distance detail.
Ah well, he's cute!...

Wow! Open water, and wildlife enjoying it! Yay! Spring!
Even a long zoom lens would have made this shot challenging since the key is to always move as close as you can to your subject. The longer the lens, the more it amplifies any shakes going on. So you'd have been climbing down an icy bank carrying a tripod and a long lens while trying to keep your balance.
There is another option... and a lot of purists don't like this option... but you could crop the original, which would bring you "closer" to the muskrat.
I'm torn on the whole cropping issue. I'll always try to fill the frame when I shoot, but it's just not always possible. I'd rather crop in order to improve an image than to just throw it away.
I keep my camera set to record the largest, best quality image possible for this very reason.
